Whilst beach weddings are very popular, the beach wedding dress can provide quite a challenge to the bride. Since this style of wedding is generally quite informal, so is the dress code.

A beach wedding dress can be blown around in the breeze, get salty sea water on it and, of course, drag in the sand. All of these need to be considered when choosing your beach wedding dress, along with the temperature and climate you will be marrying in.

Most informal style “proper” wedding dresses available are still too stuffy and expensive to consider for a beach wedding and may not travel well to the wedding destination. So, what are the options? Think light fabric, possibly shorter length, unless you don't mind the ends getting dirtied. Think simple and short on accessories for most impact. Veils, elaborate headdresses and jewelery are not necessary. Neither are shoes. Many beach brides choose to go barefoot, otherwise a pretty pair of flip flops or sandals or all that is needed.

Sarongs are a popular choice for the most informal beach wedding in the hottest climates, simply worn over a bikini. All of them in white, with a simple bouquet and the effect can be quite stunning – particularly if with bronzed skin underneath. Or, opt for a simple, white floaty dress, in chiffon or linen for the perfect beach wedding dress.

Halter necked dresses, thin straps or strapless are all good styles for a beach wedding dress and all can be covered with a pretty cardigan or wrap once the evening chill sets in. Choose a cover up in a color to match the flowers or shoes as a simple way to accessorize.

While there are designers who make beach wedding dresses, you might be lucky enough to find something just a good “off the peg” in a department store. When it comes down to it, there are no rules for the beach wedding dress apart from looking classy and elegant and keeping cool and comfortable on the day.
