What To Look Out For When Seeking a Vintage Wedding DressAn authentic vintage wedding dress could be the truly romantic's dream for her wedding, but great care should be taken in choosing one to ensure it doesn't turn out to be a nightmare. Vintage wedding dresses can be found in antique stores, specialist vintage clothing stores and at online stores for what often seem like bargain prices. However, before buying what looks like the perfect dress, you should find out as much about it as you can, particularly if buying online and you can't get up close before you purchase. Firstly, is the dress clean? If it needs to be cleaned before you can wear it, regular dry cleaning might be OK, but it might need a special archival process which can cost a small fortune. Find out what it is made from and if there is any recommendation for cleaning. Secondly, is the fabric in good condition? A couple of stitches to a hem or seam are trivial, but if all of the stitching seems to be weak, or the fabric itself is ready to disintegrate, it really isn't worth the trouble. There may also be tears or worn areas. You need to decide if they will be an issue. Adjustments to a vintage wedding dress may cause problems if the dress is not up to it. It should also be noted that women have, in general, got larger and taller over the years. Finding a vintage wedding dress you like, in good condition is not the whole of it. Accessories need to be carefully considered. A bag, hat or headdress of the same period might be easy to come by, but modern ones can work just as well with the popularity of vintage styling. Likewise, shoes can make or break the outfit. Sometimes, a modern shoe with the right style of heel can be all that is needed. Failing to find a “real” vintage wedding dress, a reproduction could be a better option since the quality is guaranteed. There are places who make reproduction clothing. Or, find a seamstress who can create one for you from a vintage pattern. You might even try a local theater's costume designer, who will know the period well.
